A world without inequality?
Inequalities in society are often decried as something to be fought against, but do you think a world without inequalities is enviable? Inequality is a reality of the world we live in. It is inevitable. A world without inequality is a utopia. It's something quite unrealistic. But should we quit striving for an egalitarian society? The pursuit of equality can be conceived as a continuum. Each step takes us closer to the ideal of equality. The process is incremental and involves patience as well as perseverance. That's the essence of our eternal struggle to build a perfect social order
Inequality shouldn't always be equated with injustice, discrimination or economic dysfunction. Nature has not endowed everyone with the same level of talent. Then why should we expect equal fortunes for all irrespective of their contributions? Don't those who toil harder with more focus deserve more? Rewards should be proportionate to the extent to which we actualise our potential. Absolute equality seems to be a socialist fallacy. Doesn't it?
The significance of resources and opportunities in the pursuit of success cannot overlooked either. Education, technology and financial support do matter in the development of competencies. Systemic inequalities act as constraints in accessing resources. It is quite fair to expect equal opportunities from society. Meritocracy must be supported by an expansion of the opportunity structure. A concerted effort from various stakeholders in society can only address systemic barriers. Our march towards a more equitable society depends on interventions at multiple levels. These levels may be political, economic, social or administrative. The government, educational institutions, health agencies, corporations and civil society organisations are key stakeholders in socioeconomic progress. They must ensure that citizens have access to all basic amenities and resources. Discrimination and prejudice must be uprooted from society with an emphasis on merit and labour as the sole determinants of success.
Talent and hard work provide a valid context for equality in society. Equality cannot be pursued without a context. Today many governments, especially those in emerging economies look to cocreate value with common citizens. Such endeavours explain the growth of start-up ecosystems in several countries. To conclude, equality must be cherished in the right perspective. Talent must be nurtured with the equality of opportunity.
